3 Smart Ideas from Brené Brown’s Work

3 smart ideas from Brené Brown's work.

From the moment we heard that Brene Brown is coming tot The Netherlands for Amsterdam Business Forum, we’ve been diving into het work.

Reading, listening, and watching everything there is to learn about Brené and her work.

And it has been a blast! Brené has sharp observations and provocative ideas that you can put into action. Immediately.

Our three favorite ideas

Idea 1: If You Want Teamwork you need to Recognize and Reward It

Idea 2: Responding to Subtle Sabotage in Meetings

Idea 3: Vulnerability is Courageous, when it’s Professional

Idea 1: If You Want Teamwork you need to Recognize and Reward It

Many companies list ‘teamwork’ as a core value but fail miserably in making it concrete in their appraisal and reward systems.

And we all know what happens when you ask people to act as team players but reward their individual achievements … well, this is very clear: there will be no teamwork.

Brené Brown’s team researched a big number of companies and concluded:

– A mere 11% operationalized teamwork: What exactly do we mean by it?

– And precisely 0% anchored it in their evaluation and reward systems.

In her own organization, Brené Brown has super strict guidelines on teamwork. One of the rules employees sign off on is about gossip:

“In our company, you can be fired by talking about somebody instead of to somebody.”

—Brené Brown

Idea 2: Responding to Subtle Sabotage in Meetings

Everyone recognizes this … You’re in a meeting, and some of the participants are annoyed by something that is happening.

They don’t speak up but show it subtly: sighing… rolling their eyes… sneaking glances at others…

Everyone sees it, but nobody addresses it and so they get away with it.

That won’t happen again with this clear 5 step approach! In this video, Brené Brown gives a crystal-clear solution in 2 minutes:

5 Clear Steps (Plus 1)

  1. Validate their emotions but correct the way they express them.
  2. Give them the chance to do better.
  3. If it happens again: confront them again and don’t settle for ‘apology and promise to do better’.
  4. Together, look for the underlying cause.
  5. Turn those into plans and action points.

Otherwise: three strikes and you are…👋

Idea 3: Vulnerability is Courageous, when it’s Professional

Brené Brown rose to worldwide fame with her TED talk ‘The Power of Vulnerability’. This talk has now been viewed 60 million times and is among the top 5 most-watched TED talks ever.

Brené advocates warmly for more vulnerability, even for entrepreneurs and leaders.

What’s the deal?

Vulnerability is Courageous…

Vulnerability is the other side of the coin to many traits we consider to be strong. For example, we want our leaders and employees to be brave, to dare to leave their comfort zones to achieve things they didn’t think possible, right?

“There is no courage without vulnerability.”

  —Brené Brown

One characteristic of courage is doing things ‘without knowing if you can actually do it’ and that requires vulnerability. Acknowledging that you might not be able to or might be afraid to do something, and doing it anyway. That is courage. So courage and vulnerability always come together.

…But Should Be Professional

A very important aspect of vulnerability at work is: it should be professional. Vulnerability does NOT mean ‘letting everything go and sharing all your doubts and insecurities’.

No: you will need to set very clear boundaries.

  1. on which aspects of my work do I need to be very decisive and confident
  2. where can I share my vulnerability (within these boundaries)

“Vulnerability without boundaries is very unprofessional.”

  —Brené Brown
